Where The Money Usually Disappears
Most DTC brands are spending money on Meta ads. Fewer of them are actually making it work. If you’ve ever looked at your ad account and thought “we’re spending, but where’s it going?”, you’re not alone. Here’s where it usually goes wrong.
1. Cold Audiences, No Creative Variation
Meta’s algorithm needs something to work with. Sending cold audiences to the same three creatives you launched six months ago isn’t a campaign, it’s an experiment with no hypothesis. What converted brilliantly in January can be invisible by March.
2. Their Funnel Has No Middle
Too many brands run a top-of-funnel awareness campaign and a bottom-of-funnel retargeting campaign, with nothing in between. The missing piece is mid-funnel content that builds trust and moves someone from “I’ve heard of them” to “I want this.”
3. Optimising For The Wrong Metric
Headline ROAS looks great on a dashboard, but it doesn’t tell you if the business is actually growing. The better questions: what’s our cost per new customer, what’s the LTV of the customers we’re acquiring, are our best customers even coming from paid social?
4. Campaign Structure Fighting The Algorithm
Too many campaigns, overlapping audiences, budget spread across 15 tests, it’s a setup for confusion, not conversion. Meta’s algorithm needs enough signal per campaign to exit the learning phase.
5. No Clear Creative Strategy
The brands winning on paid social aren’t the ones with the biggest budgets, they’re the ones with the best content. Throwing together whatever you have and hoping something sticks is not a strategy.
What Good Looks Like
A clean account structure, clear funnel stages, a regular creative production cadence, and a team that knows what the numbers actually mean. Not complicated, but it takes discipline and time, which is exactly what most in-house teams don’t have.
