The Case For Meta
Meta is still the most mature paid social platform for DTC brands in the UK. The targeting is sophisticated, the pixel data is deep, and the format variety gives real flexibility. If you’re selling a considered purchase, Meta’s retargeting is hard to beat, and it tends to perform better for older demographics.
The Case For TikTok
TikTok is noisier, faster and less predictable, but when it works, it really works. The algorithm is exceptionally good at surfacing content to the right people, even without Meta’s granular targeting. TikTok ads work best when they look like TikToks, raw, real, fast-paced. Brands that repurpose polished Instagram creative usually get disappointing results.
The Key Differences At A Glance
- Intent: Meta users are often browsing passively; TikTok users are in discovery mode
- Creative: Meta tolerates more polished content; TikTok rewards authenticity and speed
- Audience: Meta has broader age coverage; TikTok skews younger but is growing across demographics
- Learning curve: Meta has more data and tooling; TikTok moves faster and needs more creative agility
- Cost: TikTok CPMs can be lower right now, but that’s not guaranteed to stay that way
So Which Should You Choose?
If you have the budget and creative capacity, the answer is usually both, but in the right order. Start where your audience actually is, build a proven creative approach, then expand. If budget is limited, go where you’ll get the quickest signal, for most UK DTC brands we work with that’s Meta first, TikTok second.
The Bigger Point
The platform debate is often a distraction from the real issue: strategy. Which platform you’re on matters less than whether you have a clear funnel, the right creative, and someone who actually knows how to read the data.
